About the Course

The aim of this specialty orthopaedic nursing course is to provide registered nurses with the opportunity to develop knowledge in this area and to enhance safe patient care in orthopaedic practice

This course is open to all nurses in Australia or overseas


Topics included

  • Anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system
  • General principles of fractures
  • Acute nursing care of the older adult with a fragility hip fracture
  • Complications of orthopaedic disorders and orthopaedic surgery
  • Issues of professional accountability in perioperative nursing
  • Assessment and management of the patient in traction
  • Assessment and management of the patient in plaster of paris (POP)
  • Inflammatory disorders, degenerative disorder – osteoarthritis


Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course students are expected to be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system
  • Describe the pathophysiology of some of the com-mon orthopaedic conditions and related orthopaedic conservative and surgical management
  • Identify the clinical features of orthopaedic complications related to clinical management and provide the nursing intervention and management for safe patient care
  • Identify the types of pain management available to the orthopaedic patient
  • Deliver appropriate nursing care/interventions for orthopaedic patients to enhance a safe and smooth recovery.

On successful completion of course, students will receive a certificate of completion and 40 CPD hours
